Volkswagen Tiguan Vs BMW X1

Volkswagen Tiguan Vs BMW X1
It is curious that we are trying to compare a BMW and VW model. Well VW brought it onto itself. It has a model on offer that has been priced close to an entry level BMW. People need a lot more convincing to buy a VW when you can have a similar BMW for a little more. So it kind of makes sense to see if these SUVs differ in any way other than brand value

Engine

BMW engine
Who wins in the engine department? A powerful engine is part of the fun that someone paying this much will look for. The Volkswagen Tiguan has a 2.0-liter 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that is mated with 7-speed automatic transmission. The VW Tiguan has 4WD that makes it an off-roader. The engine makes 187bhp and 320 Nm torque.
The BMW  X1 sDrive20i SportX variant is the base variant and comes with a 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol engine that makes 192bhp and 280Nm torque. There is no 4WD variant offered with the X1. The engine is mated with a 7-speed transmission. The BMW X1 is also offered with a diesel engine. So looks like VW engines will not disappoint you unless you are looking for a diesel and VW is a good choice if you want some soft road ability

Transmission

Transmission
The VW Tiguan gets a powerful engine mated with a 7-speed automatic which makes it lazy. The transmission is a bit laggy even in the sports mode.
The X1 gets a FWD but it has a good amount of punch. The eco, Normal and sports mode act accordingly and the 8-speed torque converter unit is fast and there is no lag between the shift. In the manual mode the gearbox can be fully controlled by the paddle shifter.

Exterior

Volkswagen Tiguan Exterior
SUVs are loved in India for a reason, and the reason is the bulky, beasty look and a commanding driving position. The Volkswagen Tiguan misses out the bulky look and road presence. The Tiguan from the front looks like the polo hatch back on bigger wheels. However it gets a beautiful set of 18-inch alloy wheels.
The BMW X1 looks more bulky and the BMW DNA can be seen in the front grille. The 17 inch Alloy wheels look stunning. In the front both the SUVs get a set of LED projector headlamps for both high and low beam along with a set of LED DRLs.

Dimensions

VW Tiguan wheelbase
While the X1 looks better, the Tiguan is slightly bigger than the X1 when it comes to the exterior dimensions. The Wheelbase of the Tiguan is 117mm longer than the X1, but the BMW X1 is 221mm wider than the Tiguan. This will give comfortable rear seats for three.

Steering, suspension and brakes

BMW suspension
The VW Tiguan gets a AWD powertrain that gives it a lot of traction and the power is well put down to the ground even if the traction control is off. It gets a 4 disc brakes setup and the steering is on the heavier sider as it is a CBU unit and is directly imported.
The X1 on the other hand has a lighter steering wheel that might feel disconnected. The X1 also gets 4 disc brakes and the suspension is well tuned and feels comfortable and dynamic.

Interior

Volkswagen Tiguan interior
The Interior in both the SUVs is on the premium side. The leather upholstery feels premium too. The BMW X1 is a 5 seater SUV and the Tiguan is 7 seater but the third row in the Tiguan is just for name sake. So we can ignore the last row for all practical purposes.
