Road tax is a mandatory tax that must be paid by purchasing a vehicle. The road tax is imposed by the state government, each state has their on road taxes and the chargeable amount also varies. The State government issues road tax based on vehicle prices, engine capacity and fuel. It is important that you know the taxes in your state before buying a car.

Delhi road taxes are based on the Delhi Motor Vehicle Taxation Act, 1962. The taxes are based on vehicle prices and type of fuel used in the vehicle. The taxes are less for Petrol cars compared to diesel.

Maharashtra’s road taxes are detailed compared to other states. The taxes levied are based on ex-showroom price and fuel type. CNG cars have least taxes followed by petrol and then diesel. If a car is purchased for company use the taxes are double.

The road taxes in both the states are very simple, cars up to 10 Lakh will have a 12% and above which will have a 14% tax.  In Andhra Pradesh there will be 2% extra tax if a second car is purchased in the same name.
