cars that were killed by BS6: Hatchbacks and Sedans

BS6 emissions
BS6 emission norms did just reduce emission but also made it very hard for the auto makers to keep up with the low. If you have gone through the BS6 article it is clear how expensive and hard it is to meet the norms especially Diesel cars that are loved in India!. While many brands have discarded diesel for small and midsize cars, some might pack their bags to leave from India. These are hatchbacks and sedans that were discontinued due to BS6.

Fiat Grande Punto and Avventura

Fiat Grande Punto and Avventura
This was a try by fiat to enter the hatchback segment.  It was stylish and fun to handle, however it had a cramped interior and less power. Fiat addressed some of the issues to attract petrol heads by providing 147bhp engines. The company sold a combined 45 cars in 2020. The sales are as low as that there is no sense in upgrading it to the new emission norms.

Fiat Linea

Fiat Linea
Same is the case with Linea. The sedan was launched along with the Punto, it also had very low sales in 2020. It did have a very good built quality and looks. It had a 1.3-liter petrol engine that made 89bhp and 115Nm torque and the diesel engine made 92bhp and 209 Nm torque.

Honda Accord Hybrid

Honda Accord Hybrid
The luxury sedan was directly imported from japan as a full import. It was priced at ₹59.92 lakhs and it simply did not have enough buyers, Hence Honda decided to remove it from the India line-up. It had a hybrid powertrain with a 2.0-liter petrol engine and electric power with 1.6Kwh battery.

Maruti Suzuki Diesel

Maruti Suzuki Line-up
Maruti Suzuki just discarded all their diesel models due to the expensive components to meet the norms. Maruti Suzuki is known for their low cost and mid segment cost. Hence they have shifted to all petrol line up thanks to BS6 that also improves fuel economy in petrol. They also use Toyota’s hybrid powertrain to get good mileage.

Nissan Micra and Micra Active

Nissan Micra and Nissan Micra Active
Nissan Micra was the affordable hatchbacks from the brand launched a decade ago. A face lift was also launched that was more affordable and was called Micra Active but sadly it could not keep up with the pace in which other makers started offering entry level cars. In FY2020 only 680 cars were sold.

Nissan Sunny

Nissan Sunny
Same is the case with Sunny, it was a rebadged version of Renault Scala but still didn’t do well in the market. The newer rivals started offering more at the same price range. In  FY 2020, 522 cars were sold that led to the end of it in India.

Skoda Rapid Diesel

The Skoda rapid was Skoda’s try to enter budget segment cars. With competitors like Volkswagen Vento, Skoda was not ready to increase the price. Hence, the 1.5-liter diesel was discarded and the 1.0-liter turbo petrol stands still. The sales figure however shows buyers are more inclined towards the diesel with 5,806 cars sold in FY2020.

Tata Zest

Tata Zest
The Zest still had the DNA of old Tata cars. It had improved interior and better looking compared to Indica CS that it was based on. It still was not up to the mark compared to Swift Dzire that led the segment. In FY2020 a total of 3,684 cars were sold. With Tata Tigor selling in  decent numbers it was time for the Zest to retire.

Tata Bolt

Tata Bolt
Bolt was Tata’s attempt to rebuild the Indica with better interior and engine options. The hatch was however priced close to rivals like i20 and Swift that offered way more than what Bolt had to offer. Tata sold only 261 units before ending the sales however, they have the Tiago doing pretty well in the segment.

Toyota Etios, Etios Liva, Etios Cross

Toyota Etios, Etios Liva, Etios Cross
The Cabbies will miss the Etios! When all say Etios didn’t do well due to its outdated looks, it’s simply not true. It was well known for its reliability among the taxi drivers in India. It’s the new pedestrian safety law that needed the Etios to go through a major sheet metal change that was not profitable compared to the sales it made. Toyota sold a total 4,48,500 Etios until this year.

Toyota Corolla Altis

Toyota Corolla Altis
The Corolla Altis is the Executive sedan from the brand that was known for its reliability. It faced tough competition from the new Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra. It attracted only 806 buyers in FY2020, So Toyota is focusing on the Toyota-Suzuki fleet instead of a dying segment.

Volkswagen Ameo

Volkswagen Ameo
After the Polo’s success, Volkswagen tried to make the Sedan variant of the same and make it more affordable. It didn’t really attract the market as the service cost is too high as compared to the rivals. Only 4,726 units were sold in FY2020 and with such low numbers it was not sensible to upgrade it to BS6.
